Sometimes critters find the better part of valor is to retreat into a comfortable fortress like a shell or a hole in the ground. Even when they are only hiding from their own foolish embarrassment.

Imagine using candles inside a snail’s shell. It could get really stuffy in there. And yes, getting clobbered with a cooking utensil would make you a bit kitchen shy.
